Hi Simon
the major advantage is swr is flat across 5 bands from top to bottom so I can go from ssb to psk freq without a tuner,
it weighs next to nothing so you can use a slim line mast and even a TV rotator if you choose, I am seeing around 4 S points front to back, also it really seems fine with the mast down at about 15ft I worked K5D on 20m and worked them tonight on 17m it certainly seems a fair bit better than the MA5B I took down and weighs less than one of the MA5B elements !!!! so yes I am delighted with it and it cost around £100 total and if you chose to you could do it much cheaper than that
I am not sure that the neighbours are as happy about it as I am as it looks rather large in my little garden
get one built and scrap that SteppIR !!!! Hi Hi

Hi Ian
The hex beam looks great and I'm sure it will work great for you, I came to your house to pick up Jims Quad, just to let you know the quad is working very well.

Yep, scrap your steppir... i can then try to stack them :)

The pictures of the hexbeam do look good. Did you make the centre plate yourself, or was that sourced from elsewhere? I definately do like the price of it too :)
It is a little too 3D for my garden though.. I am still waiting on the neighbour to complain about my 3L steppir.

Hi Jase
My nephew works for a company that does something with sheet metals ??? so I gave him the sizes and he got it pressed out of 1/4" Ally plate for me I just had to drill it and find 2 mounting plates
It performs great probably somewhere between a MA5B and 2 el Steppir and cost around £100 so for a 5 band beam that is very light that will do me
Now if I had the money and the room I would go your route 3 el SteppIr alas not enough Garden or money
And Mel that blue stuff is sunshine but it only shines on the righteous !!!! or so they tell me
Jase I heard you calling in one of the pile ups sunday on 15m and you where hammering into Derby so I think the steppIr is working

Ian,

Nice job - and it sounds like you're pleased with the results.

I just returned from a "holiday of a lifetime" - 3 weeks touring new Zealand - so I've been out of "forum action" for a while. I managed to track down one ZL hexbeam owner in Napier. My timing was poor - while I was away K4KIO's QST article was published and I'm now working through 1200 private eMails!

To Jase: if the 3D look is unacceptable why not try a 20m or 17m "flat" monoband version. That's how I started. But the trouble was I was so pleased with the results I just had to extend it to a mulitband :)
