Mate of mine had one, was back and forth to the dealer almost every other week. Main problem was the FM board kept popping. He had other issues too.

The problems he experienced put me off them for life.

To be honest mate I think the main reason I think a lot off folk s**g them off is purely down to its rather " basic " styling- was this not the set known as the " plastic pig " :D

like the ft757gx, good in its time, unfortunatly now a bit long in the tooth- surely you must notice the difference in overall performance between your ft897 and this set ??!!

another problem is spares and lack off them, a lot off these sets are becomming only good for spares themselves if certain bits become faulty ie digi displays etc.

but good on you for enjoying your new set but bet you will be back to the more modern one before too long !!!!!

I had one as my very first HF set and was quite happy with it. only thing i didnt like was that the VFO would wear after a while and would jump about like crazy.

I used to talk to a chap on 160 metres who used it for a number of years, he never mentioned any problems and it always sounded good. I think its lucky dip, I bought an Icom 746 and that was a nightmare, but I think its OK now.
