FT-290R MKI mike

Like Alan, I always found the hand mike adequate for SSB on the FT-290R MKI, as the ALC could always be turned up a little for more punch. Also, with just 2.5 watts output most amateurs were looking to buy a linear amplifier before a Heil mike insert, but there may be someone who has tried this before. Everyone I know used, or still uses the FT-290R MKI with the standard dynamic mike, but the Heil insert sounds like an interesting project. :)

FT290 and linear amplifier!!!!
A combination of words to worry even those with the strongest disposition.

The 290 is OK if used in the way intended.
i.e. A self contained unit with an integral antenna or mobile.

If you start amplifying the output and using large antennas the 290 receiver will give up the ghost and those having to listen to it will loose the will to live. :)

Cheers

Hi there thanks for all the advice regards suitable michrophone etc when used in conjunction with the ft290r, interesting reading re. the " dirty " output off this set whenused with a linear, remember reading about this very subject many years ago in an excellent radcom article which explained exactly what this very cause was - the very fact that off every solid state 144mhz linear they tested at the time gave full power with just over half the stated input power the result was gross over driving off the linear, worse if the little ft290r had been tweaked to squeeze even more power out off it !!!
